When is the best time to fly to Nice?
The Riviera peaks from May to September. The busiest dates by far are the Cannes Film Festival in May and the Monaco Grand Prix in late May, when airport slots and hotels are booked out months ahead — reserve early. Spring and early autumn offer the same coastline with far fewer crowds and easier availability.
What to do in Nice and the Côte d'Azur?
Base yourself along the Promenade des Anglais, wander the old town and the morning market at Cours Saleya, and spend afternoons between the beach clubs of the Baie des Anges and the galleries of the city. The coast is dense with Michelin-starred tables, and the light that drew Matisse and Chagall still defines it.
Exploring beyond Nice
Nice is the launch point for the whole Riviera: Monaco is about seven minutes by helicopter, Cannes and Antibes a short drive west, and Saint-Tropez within easy reach for lunch. Your advisor can arrange the helicopter legs, ground transfers and reservations to tie the trip together.
Where a private arrival actually lands
Private flights use the Business Aviation Terminal, a separate building of about 1,500 m² next to Terminal 2, with its own customs post and its own security screening for departing passengers. You do not pass through the main terminal at any point. A handful of licensed agents work the ramp — Signature Aviation among them — and the one handling your flight is named on the confirmation rather than left to chance. On arrival the car is brought to the aircraft on the ramp, so wheels-down to moving is usually five to ten minutes; on departure, twenty minutes before the slot is enough. The ramp holds somewhere around 120 business aircraft, and in May and August that number matters more than the terminal does.
The weeks that set the price
Three periods decide the Riviera calendar. The Cannes Film Festival takes the second half of May; the Monaco Grand Prix follows within days, and between them they fill every ramp from Marseille to Genoa. August is the third, and it lasts a month rather than a weekend. MIPIM in Cannes in March, Cannes Lions in June and the Monaco Yacht Show in late September each add a week of pressure. On those dates the hourly rate is the smallest part of the quote. What moves the number is positioning, because the aircraft cannot simply stay, and crew duty, because a late return can push the day past what one crew may legally fly. London to Nice starts from around €9,500 in an ordinary week. For the festival and the Grand Prix, ask two months out; for August, several weeks.
Slots, night rules and where the aircraft sleeps
Nice is slot-coordinated all year, and business-aviation slots are requested by the handling agent rather than the operator. A turnaround longer than four hours needs the airport's agreement, which is the polite way of saying the ramp is finite. The airport itself runs 24 hours, but one night rule is worth knowing: older turbojets — those not certified to ICAO Chapter 3 or 4, and Chapter 3 aircraft with a cumulative noise margin under 13 EPNdB — may not take off between 23:15 and 06:00 local. Modern types are unaffected, and departure noise routes are policed separately and fined heavily. In peak weeks the real constraint is parking. If the aircraft cannot stay, it repositions empty to Cannes, La Môle, Toulon or Marseille and comes back for you. Both of those legs are on the quote, and we say so before you book.
Ground, luggage and animals
Monaco is about seven minutes from the airport's own helicopter terminal, which sits on the field with its own lounge and stands; in August that is the difference between seven minutes and two hours on the A8. Saint-Tropez works the same way, and a tender can meet you at Nice or Cannes if the yacht is at anchor. Golf bags and dive gear are a question of hold volume rather than weight, so send the list with the enquiry — on a light jet the hold fills before the payload does. Nice is one of the French airports designated as a travellers' point of entry for dogs, cats and ferrets arriving from outside the EU, and that is where the microchip and the documents are checked.
