The shortest sector we publish: 180 km along the Ligurian coast, fifty minutes gate to gate including the climb and descent. The flying is trivial. The two decisions that matter are which Milan airport you use and which week you are flying in.

Linate or Malpensa — eight kilometres against a curfew

Linate is eight kilometres from the centre, and on a good afternoon you are at the Duomo twenty minutes after the wheels stop. It is also slot-coordinated and closed between 23:00 and 06:00. Malpensa is fifty kilometres out — forty-five minutes to an hour by road — and open around the clock. So the choice is a straight trade: Linate for anything that finishes before dinner, Malpensa for the late arrival or the early departure. Both have dedicated business-aviation terminals, so the ground experience itself is much the same.

The weeks Milan sells out

Four fixtures move this market, and none of them are summer: Fashion Week in late February and again in September, Salone del Mobile in April — the single hardest week of the year to find an aircraft or a hotel room in Milan — and the Formula 1 weekend at Monza in early September. In those windows Linate slots go first and prices are set by what can be positioned in from elsewhere. August is the opposite: the city empties, and this becomes one of the cheapest sectors in Europe.

Why 180 km does not cost proportionally less

Fifty minutes of flying uses very little fuel. What you are paying for is a crew's duty day, a minimum charge, handling at both ends, and the positioning flight that brought the aircraft to Nice — none of which shrink with distance. This is worth knowing because it changes what to negotiate: on this sector, asking about an aircraft that is already on the Riviera is worth far more than asking for a smaller cabin.

Empty legs between Nice and Milan

They exist, and unusually they run in the direction you want. The aircraft that work this corridor are based at the Milan end — Italy's charter fleet lives around Linate and Malpensa, the Riviera's does not — so the leg that goes home empty is Nice to Milan. On most European corridors the empty leg runs the wrong way for the passenger. Here it does not. The honest limit is what it saves. An empty leg discounts the flying, and on fifty minutes the flying is the smallest line on the bill: handling at both ends, the crew's day and the airport charges do not move. Count the difference in hundreds rather than thousands, which is a very different proposition from the same offer on a three-hour sector. They also surface late — hours ahead, not weeks — so a published list is the wrong tool here. Give us the day and how far either side of it you can move.

Nice to Milan and back in the same day

Fifty minutes each way makes the day trip obvious, and this is the one sector where the aircraft costs more standing still than flying. Linate gives two free hours on the ramp and charges by the tonne after that, so nine in the morning until six at night is billed as a stay, not a wait. Because the leg is this short, the alternative is real: send the aircraft away empty and bring it back, two fifty-minute legs against a day of parking. Ask for both numbers rather than assuming. In Salone week there is no choice at all: Milan's two business terminals averaged 123 movements a day across the 2025 design week, and peaked at 152. The return has its own clock. Cannes–Mandelieu closes at 20:00 from late October to early March and reaches 22:00 only at the height of summer, so for most of the year a Milan dinner and a Cannes landing do not fit in the same day. Nice runs later, but its slot tolerance is measured in minutes, and a schedule that slips can cost the parking approval along with the slot.

Which aircraft actually fly Nice to Milan

From about €6,400 one way, in a Phenom 300 or Citation XLS+ — anything larger is bought for baggage, not for range. Both countries are in Schengen and in the EU customs union, so there is no passport control and no customs declaration: the car meets the aircraft and you leave. Departing Nice in July and August is the only slow part, because Côte d'Azur is slot-coordinated and short of parking; Cannes–Mandelieu, with its 1,610 m runway, is the faster alternative for exactly the aircraft types this leg uses.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a private flight from Nice to Milan?
About 50 minutes to Linate or Malpensa — the shortest sector we publish.
Which Milan airport should I use?
Linate if you land before 23:00: it is 8 km from the centre. Malpensa for a late arrival or an early departure — it is 50 km out but open around the clock, while Linate closes 23:00–06:00.
When is Milan hardest to book?
Fashion Week in late February and September, Salone del Mobile in April, and the Monza Grand Prix weekend in early September. August is the cheapest time of the year.
Are there border formalities between Nice and Milan?
None. Both countries are in Schengen and in the EU customs union — no passport control, no customs declaration.
Are there empty legs between Nice and Milan?
Yes, and mostly in this direction: the aircraft working the corridor are based at the Milan end, so the homeward leg is the empty one. The saving is thinner than on a long sector — an empty leg discounts the flying, and fifty minutes of flying is the smallest line on the bill. They appear hours ahead, not weeks.
Is it cheaper to fly Nice to Milan or Milan to Nice?
Milan to Nice, by about €450 — from around €5,950 against about €6,400, the same aircraft over the same 180 km. The reason is where the fleet sleeps. Aircraft working this corridor are based around Milan, so a departure from Milan usually starts with one already on stand, and a departure from Nice may not.
