Cruise speed is high-speed cruise. Manufacturers calculate range at the slower long-range cruise, with four passengers and NBAA IFR reserves — so a maximum-range leg takes longer than range ÷ speed, and a full cabin flies less far.

The Embraer Legacy 500 brings large-jet technology to the super-midsize class, with fly-by-wire controls and a six-foot flat-floor cabin. Seating up to eight, it delivers a quiet, stable ride on flights of up to six hours.

We don’t own the jets — we source them. With access to 4,500+ aircraft, we pick the exact tail that fits your route, your group and your budget. These are estimated from-prices per flight hour, to give you a sense of cost. Your exact quote depends on the aircraft, route and dates — just ask.

In detail

The Embraer Legacy 500 in practice

The Legacy 500 is the super-midsize jet with the longest cabin in the class: 8.38 m of it, over a flat floor, 1.82 m from floor to ceiling, so eight people stand up and walk about rather than shuffle. Embraer built it around full fly-by-wire flight controls, the first midsize jet to have them, and gave it the shortest landing distance in the class — 1,245 m to take off at maximum weight, 647 m to land. Range is 5,800 km, about seven hours, which covers Europe, the Mediterranean and the near Gulf. One fact settles most decisions here: the Praetor 600 is the same cabin on a longer-legged aeroplane. From around €5,500 per flight hour, exact quote on request. Avily does not own aircraft; we charter across a large operator network.

Where it came from

Embraer launched the programme in April 2008 as a clean-sheet pair, the Legacy 450 and 500, aimed squarely at the midsize territory held by the Citation Sovereign, the Learjet 60 and the Challenger 300. The brief was not to match those aircraft but to bring the class two things it did not have: a flat floor with six-foot stand-up height, and full fly-by-wire flight controls with sidesticks, which until then belonged to Gulfstream and Global-sized aeroplanes.

The Legacy 500 first flew on 27 November 2012. Brazil's ANAC certified it on 12 August 2014, the first aircraft went to a Brazilian customer on 11 October 2014, and the FAA followed on 21 October 2014. The smaller Legacy 450 flew in December 2013 and was certified in August 2015.

What changed over the run was the aeroplane around the cabin. In October 2018 Embraer relaunched both airframes as the Praetor 500 and 600 — a new wing with winglets, more fuel, uprated engines — and Legacy 500 production ended in 2020 after 80 aircraft. The family had reached 448 aircraft by mid-2026, the majority of them Praetors.

For a charter customer that history reads two ways. The cabin is a current-production cabin, because Embraer still builds it. The fleet is small, so the tail you fly is more likely to be positioned in from somewhere else, and that shows up on the quote rather than in the aircraft.

Who charters a Legacy 500

The typical booking is six to eight people crossing Europe together and working on the way, or a family moving between houses with real luggage rather than weekend bags. It is a two-zone cabin, so a meeting at the front and people sleeping at the back is a normal way to fly it.

Inside the class the decision comes down to three aircraft. The Challenger 350 is wider — 2.19 m against 2.08 — sells a ninth seat, and there are far more of them on European ramps, so it usually wins on short notice. The Citation Sovereign is cheaper by the hour and cannot be stood up in: 1.73 m of height, and only in a dropped centre aisle. The Praetor 600 is the same fuselage, the same 8.38 m cabin and roughly 1,600 km more range at a higher rate. If the flying stays inside Europe, that range is money spent on capability you will not use.

Range with a full cabin, and the Atlantic

The published 5,800 km is a four-passenger figure flown to NBAA IFR reserves. With full tanks the aircraft still lifts 725 kg, which is eight adults and light bags, so the gap between brochure and reality is modest: with every seat sold and proper luggage, plan on 5,300 to 5,500 km and a sector of about seven hours. That covers everything in Europe, North Africa and the Levant without a stop, and puts London to Dubai at 5,500 km right on the edge — light, it goes nonstop; with eight aboard, full bags and a headwind, quote it with a fuel stop or take the Praetor.

The Atlantic is the clean answer. Embraer's own positioning is that the Legacy 500 needs a fuel stop on London to New York and the Praetor 600 does not. Eastbound, US East Coast to Ireland or the UK works in favourable winter winds. Westbound plan Shannon, Keflavik or Gander.

The cabin, the bags and the lavatory

Eight seats in two zones, a genuinely flat floor, 1.82 m of headroom and 2.08 m of width, with a six-foot berthable divan. The 8.38 m cabin length is Embraer's published figure; manufacturers measure cabins from different points, so it is worth checking what a rival's number includes before you compare them. Cabin altitude is 6,000 ft at 45,000 ft — comfortable, though the Challenger 350 holds 4,850 ft and you notice the difference at the end of a long day.

Baggage is 4.39 m³, the largest hold in the class, and the aft compartment is reachable from the cabin in flight. Nine full-size cases is a realistic load, and skis and golf bags go without a conversation. The lavatory is aft, fully enclosed behind a solid door, vacuum flush; the galley and wardrobe are forward. Wi-Fi is fitted on many tails and standard on none, so we confirm connectivity on the aircraft rather than the model.

Where it flies, and the airports it can use

From London the Legacy 500 reaches Geneva in about 1h 25m, Zurich in 1h 30m, Nice in 1h 40m, Milan in 1h 50m, Ibiza in 2h 30m and Larnaca in 4h 30m — all with the cabin full and no fuel stop. Further out, Moscow, Riyadh, Tenerife and Cairo are inside a full-cabin sector; Delhi and the Caribbean are not.

Field performance is the type's quiet advantage: 1,245 m to take off at maximum weight and 647 m to land — only the Citation Sovereign needs less runway to get airborne, and nothing in the class lands shorter. Cannes-Mandelieu, Sion and Ibiza ask nothing unusual of it, and Samedan is operable subject to seasonal payload limits and the mandatory crew briefing. London City is in reach — Flexjet flew the first Legacy 500 customer operation into LCY on the 5.5-degree approach in 2016 — but steep-approach work needs the operator's approval as well as the aircraft's, so we confirm it per tail before quoting.

What moves the price

From around €5,500 per flight hour is the starting point, and positioning is the largest variable after it. Only 80 Legacy 500s were built, so on many European dates the nearest one is not in the country you are leaving from, and the empty legs flown to collect you and return to base are part of the quote. A same-day return from a city with a resident aircraft can cost less than two one-ways from a quiet field.

Crew duty is next. An early departure to Larnaca with a late return pushes a two-pilot crew past its legal day, and the answer is a night stop or a second crew. Then the calendar: Nice in July, Geneva in ski season, Cannes during the festival, when slots, ramp parking and handling all move together. A flight attendant is an option at this size rather than a standard fit, so hot catering needs specifying when we quote.

What it does well

  • An 8.38 m cabin, the longest in the super-midsize class, over a flat floor with 1.82 m of standing height.
  • 1,245 m to take off at maximum weight and 647 m to land: only the Citation Sovereign gets airborne in less, and nothing in the class lands shorter.
  • A 4.39 m³ hold, the largest in the class, with the aft compartment reachable from the cabin in flight.
  • Full fly-by-wire flight controls, the first midsize jet to carry them: a steadier ride in turbulence and less workload up front.
  • Demonstrated in service at London City on the 5.5-degree approach, subject to the operator holding the approval.

Where it gives ground

  • 2.08 m of cabin width against the Challenger 350's 2.19 m, and eight seats where the Challenger sells nine.
  • Only 80 were built, so a European search returns fewer Legacy 500s than Challengers and positioning legs tend to be longer.
  • Westbound Atlantic crossings need a fuel stop. By Embraer's own account, London to New York nonstop is a Praetor 600 sector, not this one.

The Embraer Legacy 500 against the alternatives

  • Bombardier Challenger 3509 · 5,900 km

The better answer when the cabin is genuinely full: 2.19 m of width, a ninth seat, and enough payload with full fuel that seats and tanks are close to compatible. There are also far more of them in Europe, which matters on short notice.

  • Embraer Praetor 6009 · 7,400 km

Worth the higher rate when the sector is the point. Identical cabin, roughly 1,600 km more range, a lower cabin altitude and Ka-band connectivity — the aircraft to ask for when the trip leaves Europe.

  • Cessna Citation Sovereign9 · 5,300 km

Cheaper by the hour for two- and three-hour European legs where nobody plans to leave their seat. You give up the flat floor, the standing height and in-flight access to most of the baggage.

Embraer Legacy 500 charter — frequently asked questions

Legacy 500 or Praetor 600?
Same fuselage, same 8.38 m flat-floor cabin, same 20.75 m aeroplane. The Praetor adds a new wing, more fuel and roughly 1,600 km of range, plus a slightly lower cabin altitude at 5,800 ft against 6,000. If your flying stays inside Europe the Legacy does the same job for less per hour. If the Gulf, India or the Atlantic is on the list, take the Praetor.
How far does it really fly with eight people aboard?
About 5,300 to 5,500 km, against a 5,800 km headline calculated on four passengers and NBAA IFR reserves. The drop is small because the aircraft still carries 725 kg with full tanks. That covers Europe, North Africa and the Levant comfortably; London to Dubai at 5,500 km is the honest edge case and depends on the load and the winds.
Can I stand up, and can I reach my bags in flight?
Yes to both, and together they are the reason people book this type. The floor is flat and the ceiling is 1.82 m, so most adults walk the cabin upright rather than stooped. The hold is 4.39 m³, the largest in the class, and the aft compartment is reachable from the cabin once you are airborne — useful on ski and golf trips.
Can it land at London City?
The type has done it: Flexjet flew the first Legacy 500 customer operation into LCY on the 5.5-degree approach in 2016. Steep approaches need the operator to hold the approval as well as the aircraft carrying the equipment, so it is confirmed on the individual tail rather than promised on the model. We check before confirming any LCY departure or arrival.
