When the aircraft is genuinely the right call

Three situations, and they are the real ones. A connection: you are arriving into Zurich on a long-haul and need to be in Geneva before the working day ends, with the private aircraft waiting on the same apron rather than a transfer through a public terminal. A day with three cities in it — Zurich, Geneva and Milan or Munich before dinner is routine by air and impossible by rail. And a group of four or more travelling with material that should not sit in a train carriage. Outside those, the train wins on cost and very nearly on time; we would rather say so than sell an aircraft that adds nothing.

Zurich's 21:45, which is earlier than the curfew

Zurich's published night curfew is 23:00, but the last slot for a commercial charter departure is 21:45, and it is not extended. That gap between the two numbers is where evenings go wrong: the airport looks open for another hour and fifteen minutes, and your flight is not part of that hour. During the World Economic Forum week in January the airport also limits parking to about two hours, which is the mechanism behind an aircraft leaving empty immediately after dropping its passengers — it is not permitted to stay.

And Geneva's, at the other end

Geneva refuses arrivals between midnight and 06:04 and departures between 21:26 and 05:59, with parking capped at three hours in peak periods. On a forty-minute sector these limits are generous, but they matter when this leg is the second half of a longer day: a delay in Zurich pushes the arrival, and an arrival after midnight is not a late arrival, it is a cancelled one. Both airports are slot-coordinated, so the departure time on the confirmation is a real commitment, not an intention.

Empty legs between Zurich and Geneva

They happen, and they are almost never the bargain the word implies. An empty leg is cheap because you are not paying for distance the operator has already committed to flying — and over 230 km there is barely any distance to hand back. Take the fuel out and what is left is the crew, two landings, two handlings and the aircraft's day, and that remainder is most of the price of an ordinary charter on this sector. A realistic Zurich–Geneva empty leg is a discount, not a fraction. The other half of the problem is the clock. A repositioning flight between these two airports is planned and flown inside the same day, so it surfaces hours ahead rather than weeks, at a time somebody else chose. If one appears and fits, you will see it. What we will not do is hold your dates open waiting for it. The saving on this corridor lives somewhere else entirely: in the same-day return, where one aircraft and one crew replace two positioning flights.

Zurich to Geneva by train, counted door to door

Count the whole journey and the gap is narrower than it sounds. Both Swiss airports have a railway station in the terminal — Zurich's is nine to eleven minutes from the Hauptbahnhof, Geneva's six or seven from Cornavin — so the long airport transfer that normally flatters private aviation does not exist here, and the train's own advantage of starting in the city centre is worth about a quarter of an hour rather than an hour. Against the train's two hours forty-five, the private day goes: fifteen minutes at the private terminal, forty in the air, ten on the ground at the far end, plus the two transfers. Call it two hours door to door when nothing goes wrong. You are buying roughly an hour, and at this price it is an expensive hour unless it is the one that matters. What the train cannot do is leave when you decide, and it cannot deliver you anywhere but Cornavin.

From about €6,400 one way, and the interesting thing is why 230 km does not cost proportionally less than 700. The crew's duty day, the minimum charge, the handling at both ends and — most of all — where the aircraft was before you are almost the whole bill; the fuel is a rounding error.
